Your questions answered
Common questions
Are trails groomed and paved?
No. The trails in the wilderness come in all styles, ranging nice to nothing and everything in between. Most trails are natural dirt surfaced trails which can get muddy when wet, they may have roots and other obstacles, and branches intruding in the path. Some are dual track, about 5 feet wide, enough for a walker and a bike to share. Many are single track trails which may have started off as game trails. You may also encounter purely game trails if you venture off the mapped trails.
Is it safe from Bears?
Like anywhere in Alaska, Twin Rivers definitely hosts both brown and black bears. However, the bears do not want to interact with humans, they really try to keep clear and you would be quite lucky to see one, more likely you will see tracks and scat and other signs of bears. Please familiarize yourself with our Bear Safety Pamphlet and we offer Bear Deterrent Spray for sale or rent.
Do bikes and hikers share the trails with ATV’s?
Very Rarely. ATV’s and UTV’s are not permitted in The Wilderness confines with the exception of staff use vehicles for logistics, trail maintenance, and fast safety access. ATV tours are hosted off site from The Wilderness.
Are RV’s and Trailers allowed?
Not in Twin Rivers Wilderness, but we have day use and overnight parking available at the Twin Rivers outpost and shuttle 3.5 miles to the Wilderness. Contact us for long term stay exceptions to RV’s and Trailers. Easterday Road can be a bit bumpy and hard on RV’s in general, and can get click when wet.
Do I need a 4WD to access the property?
Access is weather dependent. On a normal non-saturated dry day 2WD is just fine, but given extended rain then AWD/4WD vehicles would be strongly recommended.
